PHANTASMS OF THE LIVING. Two volumes.
London: Rooms of the Society for Psychical Research/Trubner & Co, 1886. First edition (complete with the corrections added to the later copies of this edition), 8vo., two volumes, 8vo., pp.lxxxiv,573;(ii)further corrections and additions,xxvii,733,(2)adverts, dark blue cloth, gilt; ink ownership inscription, dated [18]’91, to half title of first volume, some superficial paper-cracking to the inner hinges, foxing to prelims and edges, a little musty, rubbing to the extremities, showing light wear to the corners, splash-mark to front board of Volume II, otherwise a very good set. Both volumes bear their original bookseller’s sticker to upper corner of front paste-down endpaper (T. Brear & Co., Bradford). A seminal work detailing early experimentation with thought-transference by telepathic means and hypnotic suggestion, with the aim of discerning and documenting a supra-physical quality of mind able to be sustained beyond the barrier of material incarnation. Gurney and Myers were both part of the founding committee of the Society for Psychical Research.
